LAD #18

The decision of Dred Scott v. Sanford ruled in the favor of Sanford. This court case also made several changes to certain laws that had been passed in previous years. One such law was the Missouri Compromise. The decision of the case was that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional because it took property away from citizens of the United States if they should pass over the line of slavery. The decision was made be Supreme Court Justice Taney, he was put on the case after Justice Nelson felt that his decision was mostly his own and not the entire bench's.

This is Dred Scott

Sojourner Truth's viewpoint in he speech "Ain't I a woman?" is quite interesting. She points out that though white women don't have many rights, they get helped into carriages and, basically, taken care of. Meanwhile, she's been beaten and forced to do manual labor. Also, she has seen most of her children sold as slaves. She believes she has rights because women create men and that should allow her to have similar rights to them, as well as the white women.

LAD #16

Frederick Douglas is arguing in his speech made on the 5th of July that not all Americans are free. He feels that it is unjust for him to be celebrating his freedom when there are so many black people enslaved still in the south. Instead of celebrating Douglas mourns for the enslaved because he knows that there is a great deal of difference between him and the audience. He is obviously an abolitionist looking for rights for slaves.

LAD #15

The Gettysburg address followed the battle at Gettysburg. This was the turning point in the war essentially because this battle stopped the south from penetrating any farther north. Lincoln said in his short speech that the founding fathers, the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, deemed all "men are created equal". This meant black or white, so slavery was to be ended. He says that this great battlefield where so many American died will remain a cemetary for the fallen heroes and he says that they should not die in vain and that the United States needs to band together as a nation.

LAD #14

Lincoln's first Inaugural Address has several important factors. The first important factor is that he points out, quoting from his own past speeches, that he does not wish to end slavery even though he is a republican. He then goes on to talk about the United States as a whole and he points out that when the United States was under the Articles of Confederation(confusion), the states were unreliable and failed as separate states. By signing the Constitution it was like signing a contract to stick together and the south was not able to just succeed from the United States. Also, Lincoln says that he does not wish to end acts in which slavery is concerned, such as the Fugitive Slave Act. Lastly, President Lincoln warns the slave states that if they do not choose to be peaceful about how to come up with a solution then Lincoln will use force to come up with one.

LAD #11

The Declaration of Sentiments is essentially a rewrite of the Declaration of Independence, but instead of "all men are created equal" it is "all men and women are created equal". In the Declaration of Sentiments it states that women are subject to law that they have no say in. Women were created equal to men therefore they should have equal rights as them, including the right to vote. It basically says that it is a declaration of women against men, instead of in the Declaration of Independence when it was the colonies against the British. The Declaration of Sentiments declares that women should be educated on the laws and that they should be treated equal to men because they were originally created equal and should still be treated as such.

LAD #10 Monroe Doctrine

Americans did not want European countries to fall back into states of monarchy. Monroe thought that the European colonies in America would affect the United States if this happened, otherwise the United States was trying to stay out of the European affairs. Since most of the Spanish and French colonies had gained independence this seemed the time to strike.Adams, an important figure in the making of the Monroe Doctrine, disregarded what the czar of Russia said because he believed America should be rid of colonies from Europeans. He also hoped to stop France and Spain from tearing through South America. The United States really wanted to remain neutral, but if European powers started attacking parts of the American continents, then the U.S. would have to get involved. Also, this doctrine states "It is impossible that the allied powers should extend their political system to any portion of either continent without endangering our peace and happiness" which kind of means that the American continent as well as Europe is affected by what the other does.

LAD #9 Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus brings up quite the controversy when typed into google. Even though we have this beautiful day off for a man who some consider a hero, I believe that he is more of a villain than hero. First, he is credited with finding America in the year 1492, but this may not even be true. There were people inhabiting America long before Columbus "found" it and there are theories that other Europeans actually ran into America before 1492. Also, Columbus wasn't even looking for America he was looking for India and happened across it. It wasn't planned, it was almost completely luck in his case. Then, and maybe most importantly, he is known to have killed off several tribes of Native Americans just by showing up. Disease killed most of the Native Americans which made them easy to conquer and turn into slaves. To a lesser extent, Christopher Columbus can be seen as a hero. He did take a risky chance when setting out in 1492 and he was lucky enough that it paid off. Columbus did not find India, but he found a good source for resources which was what he'd been looking for. So Christopher Columbus, though he made some positive things happen, he is mostly a villain in my opinion.

LAD #8 Jefferson's First Inaugural Address

Jefferson's First Inaugural speech mainly focused on his praise for the Constitution. He says that it makes it very easy for him to be President because it tells him exactly what to do. However, he shows modesty in the beginning of his speech when he explains that his talents are limited and most likely below the standard of President, but then later he says that thanks to the Constitution he has a guideline to follow. This guideline applies to the entire population of the United States of America, as well. He says that America is special because the citizens have certain liberties and freedoms. He, also, says that the government is so efficient because of the people and the people have these freedoms because of the government. Basically, Thomas Jefferson says that America is the best country because of the Constitution and the people in it.

LAD #7 Washington's Farewell Address

Washington's Farewell Address

This address basically tried to warn the United States about what future hardships might occur. George Washington's main point in his farewell address was to stay away from a factious government. He wanted to make sure that the United States stayed united and not have a party that was concerned for their personal gains, instead of the good of the country. Another main point that he was trying to make was to stay away from foreign countries. Washington thought it would be beneficial if America minded its own business. He specifically did not want any strong political connections or permanent alliances with other countries. This may have been due to the fact that the 13 colonies thought that Britain was allied with them, but then they ended up fighting each other. Lastly, George Washington made America different from other countries at this time because he stepped down from a position of power to allow the government to become the republic that it currently is.

LAD #6 Proclamation of Neutrality

The Proclamation of Neutrality 1793

This document was written by George Washington. He was the president of the new country and thereby had the power to publish such a document. The Proclamation of Neutrality concerned the French Revolution. He stated that the United States was to stay impartial and that any citizen that aided any side of the war would not be under the protection of the United States military. The proclamation forbade any of the citizens of America have any part in the war. Washington closed by saying that it was signed on the 22nd of April 1793.

Federalists #10

1.  Why are factions so difficult to eliminate?

A faction is considered a group of people sharing the same belief and choosing to take action into improving their lives. Factions are basically still in effect today with the two main political parties, democrat and republican. It is difficult to get rid of these factions because people tend to stand by their beliefs and when there are many people included in that faction it is difficult to obliterate it completely.

2.  If factions cannot be removed then how can they be controlled?

The republic government is the best way to try to fix the problem with factions. This allows people to have a say in everything that happens by direct representation. The factions are able to have their voices heard which helps to satisfy the majority of people.

Republican Motherhood Blog

1.  What role did the Revolutionary War play in the transformation of housewifery to Republican Motherhood?

After the war women were encouraged to be educated, this was so that she could teach her children the importance of liberty, fairness, and history (Document B). This was after the war because during it they were fighting for liberty and fairness which made the history important. Also, during the war women were expected to do all the needed things of housework, as well as, the other things like conveying the importance of being a good person.

2. What were the consequences of Republican Motherhood on women?

Although the women were praised for their ability to make suitable homes and educating their children on the right things in life, that was all that the women were able to do. Women were expected to be in the home and that was all (Document B). Jonathan Stearns says that women's "Society is her empire, which she governs at will… It is her province to adorn social life". Though this may seem as though she has more leisure, it is insulting to women. Perhaps at this time in history women saw it as a new liberty, but it seems like Stearns is being sarcastic.

3.What is the significance of the ideology of Republican Motherhood as a stage in the process of women’s socialization?

Women found that they were able to shape the future of the world through their children. "On you, ladies, depends, in most important degree, the destiny of our country" (Document D). By being able to educate them it gave them a sense of purpose. In document c Mary Moris writes to a friend about her view on the importance of all women and how they should band together to "keep our country virtuous, (so that) you maintain its independence".

11.       Describe the setting. The setting is a women with her two children. They are sitting on what looks to be a pink couch and one child is on Mary's lap.
22.      Who serves at the center of the portrait and why?  How does the woman look?  How is she “republican” rather than aristocratic? The center of the portrait is the mother, I think this because my eyes go straight to her in the photo. Mary looks happy and proud, she represents a republican because though she has nice clothes it is apparent that she cares for her children more.
33.      What values do her sons exhibit? One of the children is holding a bird, which represents freedom and compassion. The other is reaching for his mother.
44.      Is there a significance to the position of Mrs. Tilgham’s arm? Mrs. Tilgham's arm is draped over her younger child in front of her. I think that it signifies that she is letting the older child grow up and figure things out for himself while she still has to guide the younger child a little.
